Richard Honaker

Richard Honaker has been recognized for more than 30 years as one of Wyoming’s most effective trial and lawyers. Mr. Honaker is one of the few trial lawyers who has won multiple acquittals for criminal defendants in first-degree murder cases and also has won multiple judgments and settlements for civil plaintiffs in excess of one million dollars.

Mr. Honaker’s first million-dollar recovery occurred in 1990 in a products liability case against Michelin Tire Corporation and Fletcher Enterprises. More recently, Mr. Honaker’s recoveries have included a $4.9 million sham peer review recovery against a hospital, multiple $1 million plus recoveries against trucking companies, a $5.1 million recovery in a liquefied petroleum gas case, and recoveries of $2.375 million and $8.625 million in railroad accident cases.

The Biography

Born in Laramie, Wyoming, March 10, 1951. Graduated from Harvard with honors in 1973, and from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 1976.

Charter member and past president of the Wyoming chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Currently a member of ABOTA’s national board.

American College of Trial Lawyers

Fellow, American College of Trial Lawyers.

Admitted to practice in the state and federal courts of Wyoming in 1976 and Utah in 2009, in the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit in 1977, and in the United States Supreme Court in 1989.

Served as State Public Defender for Wyoming, supervising 30 trial lawyers, 1979-1981.

Served three terms in the Wyoming House of Representatives.

President of the Wyoming State Bar, 2002-2003, and the Wyoming Trial Lawyers Association, 1986.

Named to Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers in America.

Member, American Association for Justice.

$8,625,000.00 – Largest F.E.L.A. settlement in the United States, obtained on behalf of a young man who lost both legs in a catastrophic railroad accident.

$5,125,000.00 – Oil and gas settlement obtained for a man who sustained a traumatic brain injury as a result of a defective valve at an LPG loading dock.

$4,900,000.00 – Recovery obtained against hospital for physician in federal civil rights litigation arising from a sham peer review process.

$2,500,000.00 – Settlement obtained for a woman who was injured in a gas explosion.

$2,375,000.00 – Wrongful death settlement obtained for the heirs of a man who died in a railroad accident.

Current Cases

Auto and Truck Accidents

Located on Interstate 80, we are continuously involved in federal and state cases in which people are killed or seriously injured because of the negligence of trucking companies and their drivers. One of those cases arose out of the tragic 36-vehicle collision and fire that occurred August 19, 2004 on Interstate 80 between Laramie and Cheyenne. A current case arose out of another multi-vehicle pileup in fog about 30 miles west of Rawlins.

Health Care and Nursing Home Cases

We recently resolved a sham peer review case against a hospital for $4.9 million. We represent physicians in similar cases, and sometimes represent plaintiffs in medical malpractice and nursing home negligence cases.

Andrea Syvrud

Andrea operates as the office manager, senior legal assistant, and paralegal for Honaker Law. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree with an emphasis in paralegal studies and is CLA certified. She has been with the firm continuously since 2001 and is a Rock Springs, Wyoming native.

Shannon Honaker

Shannon focuses on special projects, including witness interviews, photography, videography, and design and editing of settlement documentaries.  She holds an Associates Degree in communications, and currently serves as president of the board of trustees of Western Wyoming Community College.
